Introduction  OPT (Offshore & Plant Technology Service Co., Ltd.) has been inaugurated under the leadership of Dr.  Daniel C. S. Ahn (Chairman/CEO) and Mr. S. J. Uh (President/COO).  Our mission is to provide our clients with valuable services in international marketing and project management in order to promote business opportunities associated with an expansion of offshore oil and gas projects and industrial facilities in the Asia-Pacific area, Middle-East, West Africa or any other area our services can be provided.

Dr. Ahn, Mr. Uh and the majority of the OPT staff have an experience record of 25-30-years or more associated with offshore facilities and industrial plant projects.  Over the past thirty years, Dr. Ahn and Mr. Uh have held several executive management positions associated with offshore oil and gas projects and industrial plants, including many major EPIC projects exceeding $500-million to over $1-billion each.  Dr. Ahn was the founder of the HHI Offshore and Engineering Division, and was instrumental in the marketing and direction that led HHI to become a worldwide leader in the design and construction of offshore facilities.  Dr. Ahn and Mr. Uh were both instrumental in modernizing the offshore fabrication facilities, management systems and marine construction fleets at HHI in order to serve the needs of a growing worldwide offshore oil and gas industry.

As an indication of the spirit and cooperation that Dr. Ahn has built in the offshore industry during the last thirty years, an Indian trade journal recently published the article shown at right.

Based upon a long track record of mutual cooperation, OPT has already completed arrangements to assist a number of Asia-Pacific contractors in their business development activities.

Ramunia Fabricators.  Under Dr. C. S. Ahn's position of CEO of Ramunia International, OPT will provide technical assistance to Ramunia Fabricators Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia in support of the Angel substructures project located offshore northwest Australia and numerous projects for Bombay High offshore India and different Middle-East clients.

Shanhaiguan Shipyard.  Under Dr. C. S. Ahn's position of International Advisor, OPT will provide business development and marketing services for the Shanhaigun Shipyard in China.  The focus will be to acquire contracts for new build and/or conversion projects for FPSO or FSO oil and gas facilities.

Shinhan Machinery.  Under Dr. C. S. Ahn's position of Chairman for Shinhan Machinery Co., Ltd., OPT will support the business development for living quarters and topside modules for Middle East clients.

Sungchang Plant Construction and Industry Co Under Dr. C. S. Ahn's position of Chairman for Sungchang, OPT will provide business development and marketing support for the fabrication and construction of plant equipment and offshore structures.

With the increasing growth in energy consumption in the Asia-Pacific area, a bright future is anticipated for companies that can grow to meet the future demand for offshore oil and gas projects and industrial plant facilities. The personnel at OPT look forward to becoming an active partner that can assist its clients to grow and prosper in these business lines.

AS PRESIDENT of the Offshore Engineering & Industrial Plant Division of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Dr. Daniel C. S. Ahn has seen a lot.  So has the wide world.  The world has seen that in less than three decades, a new offshore company from Korea emerge and make its presence felt in all parts of the globe.

HHI’s offshore business had a successful beginning with an order for 89 jackets and deck structures from Saudi Arabia in 1976 as part of the Jubail Harbor Project to build an open sea tanker terminal.  The Offshore & Engineering Division has completed 3 million metric tons of offshore facilities and 3,300-kilometers of subsea pipelines in 120 projects for more than 30 clients worldwide.

At present, the division is one of the few offshore contractors in the world that can provide one-stop service in close cooperation with its Shipbuilding Division.

Early February 2004, HHI’s Offshore & Engineering Division successfully sailed out the gigantic and the most sophisticated Kizomba ‘A’ FPSO (Floating Production Storage & Offloading) for ExxonMobil.

The division accumulated the relevant technologies and valuable experience, especially after delivering two FPSO’s to Petrobras in 1999 and an FPSO to Elf Nigeria in 2001, to carry out large-scale FPSO projects.

As a result of successive FPSO project executions, it recently won another massive project, Greater Plutonio FPSO.  Its weight would be 80,000 tons and would have living quarters for 120 people.  HHI’s Offshore & Engineering Division has also delivered 10 semi-submersibles, including various drilling rigs and hull structures to various international companies.  Semi-submersibles have been traditionally built in a dry dock.

It successfully completed two semi-submersible drilling vessels, Deepwater Nautilus and Deepwater Horizon, for R&B Falcon of the US in 1999-2000.  HHI’s Offshore & Engineering Division has also completed Shell’s NaKika Floating Production Unit (FPU).  It is 92-m long, 81-m in width and 70-m in height, with a total weight of 31,274 tons.

In the process of construction, the performance was certified as a Guiness World Record for having mounted the 12,112-ton topside on the hull of the FPU by lifting it 53-m above the ground.

Like other Hyundai divisions, the Offshore & Engineering Division has also done considerable business with India.  It is already building a 5,000-ton facility for Oil & Natural Gas Corporation.  “India has many plans which can be executed by HHI’s Offshore & Engineering Division,” says Dr. Ahn.  “Our association with India is getting closer in another way.  We have 60 to 70 Indian engineers working for us.”

HHI’s Offshore & Engineering Division derives its competitive edge and technological prowess from great emphasis on research and development.

The Hyundai Maritime Research Institute is involved in activities related to resistance and propulsion, motion and maneuverability, structures, ocean engineering, noise and vibration, model manufacturing and product development and measuring and instrumentation.  The Hyundai Industrial Research Institute is involved in welding, materials, automation and energy and environment.  It is because of uncompromising commitment to excellence and innovation that HHI’s Offshore & Engineering Division has made a name for itself worldwide in less than three decades.

Not surprisingly, Hyundai founder Ju Yung Chung (1915-2001) could say, “I have tackled projects thought to be beyond human capability, and my motivation has been the satisfaction in seeing these projects succeed.”
